Writing can be a very tough business.
Wait. Let me rephrase that.
GETTING PUBLISHED can be a very tough business, especially when your genre is one that is literally flooded with new authors all the time. How do you get an agent or a publisher to notice you?
Like a lot of other indie authors, I tried the traditional publishing route first. I wrote a killer query letter and sent it out to maybe 50 agencies and small publishing houses. I only got responses from maybe a third of them (rude!), and of those only a couple showed any interest. Ultimately, the truth was that none of the agencies were too interested in taking on YA authors (a truly saturated market, I discovered) during a pandemic.
So I did what a lot of other indie authors do...I self-published.
And you know what? I didn't do horribly. I mean, at least I wasn't LOSING money. But I just couldn't figure out how to get my ARCANA books in front of readers. I kept trying to learn the business end of things, built up my social media presence, and started trying to network with other authors.
I knew that what I needed most was to punch above my weight and get to know other writers who were more established and more successful than I was, because that was the best way to learn.
Then, in November 2021, I had the good fortune to be contacted by Micah Campbell to be featured on THE STORYTELLER'S SAGA podcast (see my media page). Micah and I hit it off, and we kept in touch via Instagram for the next few months. In August, he reached out to me again, asking if I'd be interested in submitting a short horror story for a charity anthology to fight human trafficking. Of course, I was totally on board!
In working together with this phenomenal group of writers, Micah started ANATOLIAN PRESS, with the intent of filling in the huge chasm between traditional publishing and self-publishing, and I am thrilled to announce that I have joined the ANATOLIAN PRESS stable of writers. I count myself so blessed to be counted among the talent that Micah and AP have signed so far, and I look forward to working with such a wonderful and ethical company.
So, dear readers, a few big changes will be coming! RISE OF THE MOON and RUSH TO JUDGEMENT will be re-issued under the Anatolian Press label in the coming months, and the third book of the trilogy, STRENGTH OF WILL, will be on the menu soon after.
